San Diego picked up a late night 2014 commitment according to the Texas Hoops twitter account. Marcus Harris, a 5-11 point guard from MacArthur High School in San Antonio, Texas, became the Torero’s first 2014 commitment. Harris held an LMU offer, as well as Liberty,Redskins Jersey, St. Bonaventure,Cyclists will get 3, Long Island-Brooklyn,Redskins Santana Moss #89 Jersey, Sam Houston State, Abilene Christian, Stetson, and UTSA.
With Christopher Anderson graduating after 2014-2015, Bill Grier will need to look for a future replacement for him. Harris will get a year under his belt learning from Anderson, and then will be ready to step in and assume the point guard role. However with Jordan Bickerstaff and Therone Tillet on the roster, that could take longer than anticipated.
According to multiple scouting reports, Harris will need to work on his shooting to improve his all-around offensive arsenal. He is a legitimate threat off the dribble, but needs a jump shot to become an overall threat from outside. However, with constant work in the gym, Harris could easily accomplish that.
With Harris committed to the Torero’s, it likely means that San Diego will stop pursuing Kyron Cartwright and Trevor Dunbar, two of the top WCC prospects in the WCC. This could leave openings for teams like LMU and Pepperdine to swoop in and snag a point guard for the future. Keep in mind that Gonzaga, San Francisco, Santa Clara, and San Diego have all gotten verbal commitments from point guards. It seems like a trend in this years recruiting cycle.
